2018-2019: Projects

WORKPLACE
1 DUNDAS ST W
FALL 2018

The concept is to create one uniting shelter for the Canadian arts and crafts, to roof Canadian identity and culture.
Subsequently, it draws to the idea that each of the individual work becomes a fragment of the whole identity.

Craft Ontario and Canada Council for the arts both operate as the guild and shelter for all Ontario and Canadian arts and craft related activities. The proposed workspace would aim to connect the two organizations, and more critically, bridge relationships between arts and crafts by drawing inspiration from Canadian heritage -- the very thing that is mutually significant to both organization. The diverse and unique works of each Canadian member comes together to create a paradigm for the Canadian culture. Each project captures a fragment of the whole Canadian history and identity; the ideas and messages they each convey ultimately connect all the rest of the Canadians who appreciate them to the creators.
Therefore, this design project will take on the mission to embody and curate the different fragments of spirit and attitude of Canada. Together the different moments will heavily influence what this shelter for Canadian artistry will look and feel like to the people it houses.

RHYTHM
STUDENT WELLNESS CENTRE
111 GERRARD ST E
WINTER 2019

Students often struggle to manage overwhelming stress and anxiety.  Student life on campus is always regulated by some form of schedule and rhythm.  Stress and anxiety often come from anomalies in life, disrupting the internal rhythm; resetting and resynchronizing this rhythm relieve the tension.

Changing the rhythm in the environment can manipulate people’s internal rhythm, i.e., there is a sense of security provided by rhythmic qualities that guide people along space and time.
Rhythm is in everything. It is movement; it implies livelihood.
The primary notion of rhythm comes in the form of music. Music is primitively the instrument in which people have always used to express their inner emotions. It helps people through times of trouble, of isolation, and of hatred by helping them alleviate, gather, and empathize. The gathering of music has always been connected to the gathering of food. Music and food are innately human’s strategies to self-comfort and retune their feelings.
Therefore, this proposal to reimagine Ryerson’s 111 Gerrard St E into an eatery/ open music venue aims to bring about wellness by facilitating the act of gathering and sharing -- by slowing down student’s footsteps/paces with the use of food and music. The space will also be heavily informed by a proposed green path that juxtaposes the built structure, blurring the line between interior and exterior, intended to synchronize the rhythm of nature with the artificial.
The building will facilitate students with a place to express and share their voice in music; meanwhile benefitting other students as music therapy. The music helps retain students as they eat healthy, advocating the importance of self-care. The space will provide students with a place to socialize and gather over food and audio-visual stimulation.
Music has became too isolated due to the wide use of personal music players. Downtown Toronto’s music scene has been diminishing especially around Ryerson over the past years. The space also aims to benefit the music culture of the city in a social effort to encourage people to share music again.
In addition, the entire space will also be operated and managed by student associates and workers, providing another option for financial wellness. The 2nd and 3rd floor will be more private facilitating physical and mental health offices (counselling, administration, examination) and also safety and management offices.
